Ever seen a cat slowly blink both eyes at you? This is a cat kiss and humans can do it too. It is an incredibly powerful and useful bit of cat-speak as it allows you to signal your love and good intent from a distance, no hands!
Kato isn't the smoogiest cat, and he doesn't like a lot of touching especially full body strokes. But he is an incredibly affectionate cat. So I needed a way to show him how much I love him in a way he would like. Cat kisses, love beams, and soft talking just to him, have given him the confidence to jump on my lap for cuddles (no stroking though).
Two days ago he was on my bed while I was getting dressed, staring into space. I said his name with delight and beamed my love at him, including some cat kisses and a side tilt to my head (it shows interest to a cat). He delightedly flopped over to bask in my love beam, showing his belly and snuggling his head into the doona- beaming back at me with pleasure slitted eyes. I knelt down by the bed, resting my head on it, to continue our mutual admiration. Kato rolled around in delight.
And I have had reason to like cat kisses even more lately. With my hands full with little Ava, I can still say 'I love you' to Kato. I can signal that this new creature is a good thing and that 'I love you'. And when I'm busy with chores, I still have eyes to say I'm not too busy to notice you and 'I love you'. And one more extra delight, over the past two days, I have caught Kato sitting and showering Ava with cat kisses!
The only downside to cat kisses is when they have become so innate that you greet your husband, not with a human wave or speech, but with blinking eyes!!
