A cat's purr is a manifestation of their highly individualised personalities. It does not mean the same thing across all cats. On a subtle level, you'll get to understand what and when - and maybe then why - this particular cat purrs. Of course, only if you invest in the cat and seek to know them.
If you believe all cats are the same and there's not much to know, then there's still some pretty interesting stuff to know about purring. Cats purr when they are happy, AND when they are stressed or sick. And they can also purr to heal and soothe another being. Did you know there has also even been research into the frequency of a cat's purr, and it is a frequency that promotes bone healing?! That's just another reason to love a bundle of purring cat!
I often reference Pamela Merritt's 'Way of Cats' blog, and that is what prompted today's post on purring. She has written about purring so perfectly I just had to cross-promote. So here it is, the best low-down on purring I have ever read: http://www.wayofcats.com/blog/purring-its-complicated/31358
