In my last post 'Should we put the human down?' I objected to the promotion of a view that cats should be killed if they 'malfunction'. I complained twice to The Australian, who didn't bother to respond. So I escalated my complaint to the Australian Press Council. I'm less than impressed with their response:
Re: The Australian
I refer to your complaint received on 5 August 2013.
The complaint form outlined your concerns with article “Bitten by my pet theory” published on 29 July 2013.
The Executive Director has decided not to proceed with your complaint as our Principles allow for expressions of opinion.
We believe it is in the public interest that a wide range of expressions of opinion are published as this is an important element of freedom of speech.
We note that a possible breach can occur if relevant facts are misrepresented or suppressed, however this does not appear to be the case in relation to this article.
Accordingly, we do not believe that the article breached any of our Principles.
Although we are unable to assist you further, we thank you for bringing the matter to our attention.
