I read about the power of 'their own furniture' somewhere in the dim past, and tried it on Kato. Oh my! I told him that the stool I was carrying in from the car was his. He was leaping and sniffing around it. The first port of call was the sewing room. And he sniffed and cuddled the soft material and chased the scissors (yikes!) as I cut out the cover. And he chased the cotton. And tried to work out the sewing needle moving up and down. After 40 minutes the cover was done. The very second the cover was in place, so was Kato! He is so happy to have his own chair. And so are we.
Now we have an alternative to the kitchen bench when he just has to see what we are doing. We simply pull over the stool and redirect. And he is just inately chuffed to have his own stool!
And it works on Ava too! Before we knew just how caring Kato would be with a babycat, we thought we'd best buy Ava her own stool too so there weren't fights. The stool in the picture had to be put together...and as you can see, the very minute it was assembled...Kato claims it! Ava just snuggles right in there too. So now we have a kitchen stool - also used as part of a play circuit with the lounge chairs and cat tree - a stool that overlooks the garden, and a third (I got a 2 for 1 deal!) that overlooks the balcony and can be climbed up to via the staircase toy box.
All the stools are actually really good bits of furniture that I randomly found at closing down sales. They are high enough to see the kitchen bench (bar stools), are lovely leather (hence I made covers), and have a hydraulic elevation system so they can double as guest dining chairs. The first (which is more comfortable from a human perspective) was just $50, the second and third $80 - red leather! But I did see sturdy wooden stools at the clearance sale for just $10, so it's worth looking around. I haven't got around to making a cover for the new stools yet, so we have fluffy blankets tucked and draped around it. I don't know how they know...but they KNOW it's their place, and their chair. I get very funny looks if I sit on one of their stools!
